Local communications is a useful addition to the gaming experience, if not directly to the operators' coffers. However, they should realise that mobile data applications of all types will have a greater impact on the bottom line if they foster all aspects of substitution, community and mobility rather than just price and raw technology.

Next step, MMS and picture messaging?"

I've actually stopped playing games on my Nokia 3650 because I found it caused me serious eye strain. As the reports goes on to suggest, consumers will substitute use of PDAs, digital cameras, gaming consoles and music players. Right now my 3650 plays all those roles, albeit modestly. The camera is obviously limited as is the gaming functionality, and even though I can play MP3s it's not exactly an entertaining experience. However, I'm sure that by 2006 (never mind 2008) I'll be able to replace the phone with a new Nokia model that ups the ante in each of those departments, offering a perfectly adequate all-in-one gizmo.

Turning consumers into producers [from Jon Udell]

Coincidetally, in following on from my post below about Douglas Rushkoff's article, I'm just after reading this Jon Udell entry which expresses similar ideas in a slightly different way. In this TheFeature article he extends his 'contact not content' theory with an examination of the trend, among younger people in particular, away from the desire to own and hoard media towards merely wishing have control of their access to it.

Central to his hypothesis is the idea that the more we accumulate and store digital goods the more of a chore it is for us to organize and access them. As long as we have ubiquitous access we shouldn't need to hoard.

So what does this mean for the wireless industry? A lot. It means that the next shift in content delivery and marketing may be as extreme as Steve Jobs' recent innovations in music distribution for Apple's iTunes (now imitated or soon-to-be imitated by the entire music industry).

It's a gamble, for sure, but the best place to invest in the future of content may be to focus on temporary delivery and always-on libraries. Kids are coming to believe that the person who takes responsibility for storing and maintaining the data is the one who deserves to be paid. And they're smart enough, at any rate, to realize that it's a job they don't necessarily want to be charged with, themselves.

Ruskoff also quotes from a Joi Ito piece that illuminates the relevance of these trends to the mobile industry even further -

"Attention is moving from commercially produced content to dynamic or contextual content. An example of this is the shift of Japanese youth spending from CD purchasing to karaoke to cell phone messaging. CDs let you passively consume content produced by companies. Karaoke is more interactive - you are part of the content. With Cell phone messaging, the customer creates the content."

I can back up these ideas with evidence from my own experiences. I used to accumulate browser bookmarks but now just use Google. Google has become my access gateway to the internet. As long as I have a map I want I don't need to store signposts. Neither will I buy CDs any more when iTunes and Napster come to Europe. I have no desire for the liner notes, jewel case or artwork, I just want the vibrations in my ear. As for movies, I use Netflix like DVDRentals.ie, no longer buying DVDs because convenient access to a large library of movies is so much better. Neither do I buy magazines any more, preferring instead to digest the vast sea of quality journalism (like Rushkoff's articles) available on the internet.

Actually thinking about these trends reminds me of "Star Trek: The Next Generation" where Jean-Luc Picard's ready-room was relatively minimalist with no clutter. There was no need for clutter of course because most things could be instantly materialised in the replicator. CC/PP 1.0 is a system for expressing device capabilities and user preferences, using the Resource Description Framework (RDF). Used to guide the adaptation of content, a CC/PP profile describes device capabilities and user preferences.

In simple terms, it's been clear that there needed to be a standard way for a cellphone or a personal digital assistant with Web access to be able to say to a Web server, "I am a cellphone. My display size will not allow me to see a framed site. Please deliver the content in detailed lists instead." This is an example of what is known as a "delivery context," where the device characteristics, user preferences, and constraints put requirements on how content can be effectively displayed on the device for the user.

What about MMS Voicemail?

Also on Mobitopia Chris Davies has an interesting post suggesting that his operator should be using MMS to send him his voice mails. It seems that he currently has to wait an incredibly long time for SMS notifications of new messages but, like other commentators to the post, I certainly don't have that problem with Vodafone in Ireland.

However, I still think this this idea has much merit for the purpose of being able to store voice mail on your PC. In my experience of using AMR audio encoding it certainly achieves terrific compression ratios and would be ideal for storing a library of voice messages.

Now it may seem unlikely that you'll wish to archive regular voice messages for the long term but let's imagine alternative uses here. How about being able to accept community reports (eg. traffic and football match reports) for a community portal? Setup your Symbian mobiel to sync with the portal each morning and play them back through a bluetooth headset while you commute. Certainly beats radio :-)

Bluetooth to the rescue [from InfoWorld]

The excellent Mobitopia IRC Channel tips us off to a great story by Chad Dickerson in InfoWorld about how Bluetooth saved the day for a few ordinary people in an ordinary, every day situation. But, as much as Chad sings the praises of techology, he rightly points out that its not technology for technology sake which is so wonderful but various technologies working together seamlessly to make our lives that bit easier -

"This experience encapsulated so many benefits about technology that I don’t really know where to begin. There’s the wireless angle, the smart phone angle, the utility of Bluetooth, and the maturation of the Internet itself as a tool for the average person to get things done in daily life. For me, though, the experience demonstrates something more transcendent than any one technology: when quick thinking and the right solution come together at the right time, technology can be downright heroic."

Wasn't it the great Arthur C. It is fully integrated into phone application environments such as MMS, BT, IR and e-mail. Recorded videos can be played back on all 3GPP compliant players such as but not limited to Philips Platform4 PC Player and Apple Quicktime 6.3.

Video sofware is a killer-app on a mobile phone. Nearly ten years ago I jumped to the chance of buying a camcorder when a friend decided he was selling his. Over the following few months family occasions of every kind were used as an excuse for this wannabe Spielberg to record hours and hours video footage. And then, suddenly, it all stopped. For a number of reasons -

The camera was bulky and not easy to carry everywhere. As the best movie moments are usually spontaneuous this was a severe limiting factor to the entertainment value of captured footage

Recharging was a chore

Editing was impossible without getting extra expensive equipment and no editing meant painfully boring passages

Sharing movies was difficult

During this holiday season I've recorded dozens of 10 second video clips on my Nokia 3650 mobile phone. The phone goes everywhere, is always charged up and ready to capture an event at a moments notice.

Each video clip occupies no more than 100kb of disk space. I've used Apple Quicktime to sequence those clips, stitch them together and export a standard .mov formatted file for viewing on any PC. A 2 minute video fits in a single floppy diskette and can thus be shared easily among family and friends. Playback size is only a few square inches and video quality is certainly basic but overall this home video system beats my old camcorder hands down.

MMS Picture Size Problem

A friend of mine finally got a camera phone so at long last I've been able to test phone-to-phone MMS. Other people have noted the same problem on the boards.ie forums. This is not good! I still don't know anyone personally with a Siemens phone but the last time I was in the Vodafone shop I could appreciate just how much they'd improved looks-wise. It's the main reason I've railed, at length, against the growing power hunger of the operators (such as Vodafone), whose vision of a intelligent UI seems limited to a cartoon web page.

Amazing streaming video solution

Sometimes its amazing what you come across when aimlessly surfing the web, which I was doing for a time this morning while waiting for a phone call. I'm not quite sure how I got there but boy was I delighted to come across DV4.com.

Among other digital media technologies, DV4 offer a solution for streamed live or on-demand video to mobile phones over GPRS. Unfortunately you need to fill out a form to arrange a demo of their 'traffic camera' on Fitzwilliam Square in Dublin but believe me, if you have a Nokia 3650 or similar phone its more than worth it! What I saw was by far the smoothest and highest quality streamed video I've ever seen on a mobile phone. In fact, it was much better than anything I've ever seen through Realplayer on my PC over a 56kps dial-up! Eye-popping stuff. I never imagined live video could be so good pre-3G.

Women want MMS [from Unstrung]

"European women are particularly interested in mobile services such as e-mail. Not only do most women I know take way more photos when on holiday, at weddings, etc, than I ever will but they all spend alot more time on the phone too!! We've had fixed-line SMS in my household for the last 4 months and have hardly used it at all. Why? Well I think its a combination of two factors -

1)The nature of texting, which tends to be personal. Texting in general tends to be alot of whispered sweet nothings, jokes and howya's. Messages like that are obviously personal in nature and you want to be sure the intended recipient is the only recipient!

3)The age profile of texters. By this I mean that most texters, here in Ireland at least, already have their own mobiles. The main use for fixed line texting then is contacting family members who don't have mobiles, who tend to be older non-texters. Which is a bit of a catch-22 if you think about it.

So it seems to me that adding SMS and MMS to home-based fixed-lines is a bit like adding fax capabilities - a largely wasted effort because of a mistaken understanding of the of device. However, if the user interface can be optimally simplified there will be at least one great use - sending family photos (eg. of grandchildren) to grandparents.

Cellular's Saving Grace [from Business 2.0]

"Just in time for the holidays, and as voice revenues decline, camera-equipped cell phones top many consumer wish lists."

Well I hope so because I'm getting pretty tired of having no-one to photo message! Can you imagine getting a PC without a 3rd party app?

Mobile phones set to sparkle amid Christmas sales gloom [from The Sunday Times]

"Strong demand for phones with colour screens and integrated cameras, partly driven by low prices, has left many shops struggling to obtain supplies of the most popular models."

It's Nice to Share [from TheFeature]

I've long chastised the wireless operators for trying to be something they're not, for building walled gardens, putting their silly logos on handsets, and branding themselves as hip media companies (vis-a-vis Vodafone with David Beckham).
Douglas Rushkoff similarly takes them to task for these misguided notions of self-importance -

"The wireless strategy, as currently espoused by this admittedly biased wing of the cellular industry, is to “move up the food chain” away from wireless access and into what they believe is the rarefied and more profitable realm of content creation.
